The Twinkie is dead. The Ho Ho is toast. Ding Dongs, Suzy Qs, Sno Balls — all long gone Johnnie. And Wonder Bread — “Helps build strong bodies in 12 ways” won’t be building anything, anywhere from now on.

The announcement by Hostess Brands Inc. that it’s going out of business — shut down, it claims, but an unreasonable and recalcitrant union — means an end to some of the best-known bad food items on corner store shelves. (It’s not true, by the way, that if you put a Twinkie on a shelf and leave it there for a decade or two, it would still be fresh as new. A company executive told the New York Times in 2000 the shelf life was no better than 7 to 10 days. If your friendly grocer didn’t strictly adhere to that timetable, who’s to blame?)

The Wall Street Journal blamed the company’s woes…
